What a lovely piece of writing. I think every chef has had at least one stomach-lurch moment when they realise a knife is missing. So glad you got yours back!
One thing I didn't add in this story is that I forgot to pack my maki-su (bamboo rolling mat). The night before the dinner, I asked another team member (not a chef) to help me find one because I wasn't sure I would have time. The next morning I found out he lucked out because was trying to locate a "monkey suit" for sushi rolling....So that put me scrambling to try to find one.
In addition to catching cabs all over the place to pick up coolers, I was going to have to see if I could find one. Three of us started off in the same cab. We made a few stops at sushi bars for me to grab a maki su where I was mostly met with suspicion...So frustrated and distracted, I jumped out of at my cooler pick up stop without my knives. The pastry chef hung on to them. She figured instead of calling to bother me while I was desperately trying to get a maki su, she would just give them to me when she got there.
Haha, yes probably. From mispronunciations to people being suspicious of a lady with an Afro looking to buy a sushi rolling mat, there's definitely an entire article there.
Phew that sounded close. I get that feeling totally. It happened when I lost a computer on a bus and all my writing was on there (I stupidly hadn't backed it up). The one piece I was really cut up about I had emailed to someone else that day so it was saved.
Oh my goodness! That must have been a horrible feeling! Thank goodness for the one piece saved, but oh to lose your computer with all the other writing...

I’ve definitely had other stomach lurching moments regarding my knives but this still feels like it happened yesterday.
But I have to know how the knives ended up with the pastry chef?!!!
The logistics of our day were so convoluted.

She was a life saver!
I think you have a full article with this story!!
